Chia Fresca (iskiate)

I just read a book called “Born to Run: A Hidden Tribe, Superathletes and the Greatest Race the World Has Never Seen” by Christopher McDougall. It’s great read and has me thinking about taking up running (thinking about it is as far as I’ve gotten). Much of the book centers around a tribe, the Tarahumara. These superathletes run 50 miles like they were out for a Sunday stroll. McDougall describes a beverage that they imbibe, chia fresca, as a “home brewed Red Bull.”

I like this beverage, but it isn’t for everyone. It’s a tad on the slimy side. I would say this recipe is for the chia seed enthusiast; novices should stick to the smoothies.

1/4 cup warm water
1-2 teaspoons honey
1 cup cold water
1 tablespoon chia seeds
2 teaspoons fresh lime juice

In a glass, add honey and warm water and stir until the honey is mixed. Add cold water, chia seeds and lime juice. Stir and let sit for five minutes or so. The chia seeds will form a gel. Stir again and drink up, you warrior you!

Serves one.
